Dear Parents,

As you look over our school goals for the 2010-11 year, you will note a desire on our part to offer a service to our students at no charge to our parents.  I am referring to a new program we are calling SCHOLARS and is designed to help students in grades 3-8 who struggle to do their homework successfully and in a reasonable amount of time.

A complete explanation of the program follows.  While there are still some aspects to work out, we intend to begin the program during the week of September 13.

fgFROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE

August 26, 2010

Often during the summer, when devoting time to updating the Parent-Student Handbook, I occasionally wonder just how many people bother to read this document.  Despite efforts to underscore the importance of this tome (as it contains all of our school policies and procedures) it often appears that many people simply put it in the drawer with the intent of reading it at a later time.

Much to my delight, I found out yesterday that our children do indeed read this manual.    Following our half-day, many Jr. High teachers informed me of many questions regarding the omission in the handbook of any statements regarding late homework or make-up.  Upon investigation, the teachers and I found their observations to be accurate.

The omission can best be attributed to the fact that both of those policies were slated for review.    Our examination of the consequences for late homework, for example, led to one of the goals that will be shared with you on Orientation Night.  How that information was inadvertently left out of the Parent-Student Handbook remains a mystery.  Nonetheless, the following policies for turning in late assignments and for make-up are listed here and should be considered to be part of the handbook.

Late Homework

In order to receive full credit, work must be handed in on the day it is due.  Homework is considered late if not given to the assigning teacher before the beginning of the next period class that day.  Thus, a student who left an assignment in an outside locker during a third period Math class, for example, may retrieve it at the end of that class and turn it in before the beginning of the next class period (Reading for example) without any penalty.  Afterwards, it is considered late.    After Labor Day, such omissions will also result in the issuance of a Homework/Study Habit form so the parents can be apprised of the situation.

Regarding late homework:  Ten percent of the total value of the missing assignment can be deducted for each day it is late.  However, teachers will contact parents on the first day the homework is missing to apprise them of this policy and to better ensure the likelihood of the assignment being completed by the next day.  Such communication may be in the form of a Homework/Study Habit form (Academics), phone call, or email.  The intent of this outreach is that no student would ever lose more than the aforementioned ten per cent.  Should such intervention not produce the desired result, we will have our counselor intervene on her next work day.   If the problem continues to persist, the student will also be required to attend the After School Study Club to receive needed assistance.

Late Homework & Weekly Progress Report

Missing assignments will be listed as a “O” on the Thursday online progress report.  This will obviously greatly impact the grade and be a further motivation to ensure such tardiness does not become a habit.  If assignments are missing due to an absence, two asterisks (**) will be entered on the report.

     Make-up & Jewelry

The popularity of the ‘silly bandz’ last year led us to review our policy on such fads.  Bandz were considered a form of accessory and thus placed under the banner of our uniform code.   Because these bracelets can be a distraction, (some medical professionals even consider wearing multiple bandz to be a potential health risk) we are not going to allow students to wear more than one.  Experience also dictates that additional bandz should not be brought to school to trade at lunchtime, for example, as they would likely get lost and cause ill feelings.

As for jewelry, our policy that dangling earrings, bracelets, and necklaces are not permitted.   Make-up, which includes nail polish, remains forbidden for all students.

spanish Ss. Peter & Paul School beginning this school year is offering Spanish classes after school for grades K-3rd grade.  The classes will be on Tuesday afternoon immediately after school starting Tuesday, Sept. 14th. through Feb. 22nd.  The beginning class is for K-1 & 2nd grade, and the Intermediate class is 2nd & 3rd grades (not exclusive).  The children need to bring a snack from home as there will be time for a snack.  Also, the children will be escorted from their classrooms to the assigned room in the elementary building (library or music room;TBD).  Registration forms are being sent home with each child this week.  These forms need to be mailed back to the address on the bottom of the registration form.  Please call Chantal Dejean with any questions regarding the classes at (630) 579-0464.  Also, we are still in need of volunteer help.  Volunteers would help escort the children from their classrooms to the library/music room, and would stay for the duration of the class as a room monitor.  Please call Julia Wrobel at (708) 702-9928 if you are interested.
