Even though the War had ended, the freedmen, or ex-slaves, were still not treated as most Northerners had wished. What really helped the African Americans was the 13th amendment, which stated that all African Americans held in Slavery were to be set free all across America. The South thought that this was a very pointless amendment and would not listen.

Then on April 14, 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth. He was part of the Copperheads that established a society to kill basically the power of America. He was the only one succeed at his duties, and was later shot in killed in a barn in Virginia. The African Americans thought that this was the end for them. With Andrew Johnson in office now, he had no intention to help or even acknowledge them.

Then segregation became a big issue in the part of our country. Many blacks were being treated as if they were nothing. The blacks and the whites had separate bathrooms, separate schools, and had nothing to do with the whites. Then the Freedman’s Bureau came into affect and helped out the blacks. This provided food and clothing and medical services for the blacks. So even though the war was over, blacks were still treated as they were in the war, unequally.
